Sleep apnea evaluation and treatment in Edina, Minnesota

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep-related breathing disorder in which the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. People may notice loud snoring, gasping, witnessed pauses in breathing, morning headaches, dry mouth, poor concentration, or excessive daytime sleepiness.

At Nurture Sleep PLLC, evaluation begins with a detailed sleep and medical history. When clinically appropriate, testing may be completed at home. More complex symptoms or medical conditions may require in-lab polysomnography.

Common signs

Loud snoring, witnessed apneas, choking or gasping, unrefreshing sleep, fatigue and morning headaches.

How diagnosis works

Your symptoms, health history and examination guide whether home sleep apnea testing or in-lab testing is appropriate.

Treatment options

Treatment may include PAP therapy, oral appliance therapy, weight-related strategies, positional approaches or other options depending on your diagnosis and clinical needs.

Why treating sleep apnea matters

Untreated obstructive sleep apnea can affect daytime alertness and quality of life and may contribute to cardiovascular and metabolic health risks. Treatment is individualized based on severity, symptoms, medical history and patient preference.

SLEEP APNEA RISK

Could you be at risk for sleep apnea?

Common warning signs and risk factors include loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, daytime sleepiness, higher body weight, high blood pressure and certain airway or anatomic factors. A screening tool can estimate risk, but it cannot diagnose sleep apnea.

Concerned about your risk? A sleep medicine evaluation can help determine whether testing is appropriate.

SLEEP APNEA RISK FACTORS

Who is at higher risk for obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea can affect people of any body size and at any age. Certain factors can make it more likely, including:

Higher body weight or obesityExtra tissue around the upper airway can make airway collapse during sleep more likely.
Older ageRisk generally increases with age.
Male sexOSA is more common in men, although women are also affected and may present differently.
Large neck, tongue or tonsilsAnatomic features that narrow the upper airway can increase risk.
Family history or geneticsInherited airway anatomy and related conditions can contribute to risk.
High blood pressure and certain medical conditionsOSA commonly coexists with cardiometabolic and endocrine conditions.
Alcohol useAlcohol can relax throat muscles and worsen upper-airway collapse during sleep.
SmokingSmoking can contribute to upper-airway inflammation and increase risk.
Symptoms matter too. Loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping or choking during sleep, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches, or excessive daytime sleepiness are reasons to consider a sleep evaluation.
