Sleep Medicine FAQ

Clear answers to common questions about sleep evaluation, testing and treatment.

Frequently asked questions about sleep medicine

Do I need a sleep study if I snore?

Not everyone who snores has obstructive sleep apnea, but loud snoring combined with witnessed pauses, gasping, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches or certain health conditions may warrant evaluation.

Can a sleep apnea test be done at home?

Yes, home sleep apnea testing can be appropriate for selected adults when obstructive sleep apnea is the main concern. A clinical evaluation helps determine whether home or in-lab testing is the better choice.

What happens after a home sleep study?

Your study is reviewed and interpreted by a qualified clinician. The results are discussed with you along with treatment options or additional testing if needed.

What are common treatments for sleep apnea?

Treatment may include PAP therapy, oral appliance therapy, positional approaches, weight-related strategies or other individualized options depending on the diagnosis and clinical context.

Can insomnia be treated without sleeping pills?

Yes. Behavioral and cognitive approaches are central to evidence-based insomnia treatment. Medication may be considered in selected situations as part of an individualized plan.

What is restless legs syndrome?

RLS is characterized by an urge to move the legs, usually with uncomfortable sensations that occur at rest, worsen in the evening or at night, and improve temporarily with movement.
