Hypersomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness or prolonged nighttime sleep despite getting what should be a normal or even extended amount of rest. Unlike regular tiredness, hypersomnia significantly interferes with daily life, work, and relationships. People with hypersomnia may fall asleep at inappropriate times (like during conversations or meals), struggle to wake up, or feel groggy for hours after getting up.

Hypersomnia is more than just “sleeping a lot” — it’s a medical condition that needs proper diagnosis and care. Left untreated, it can impair memory, focus, and emotional well-being.

Symptoms:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, even after a full night’s sleep

  • Prolonged nighttime sleep (more than 10–12 hours)

  • Difficulty waking up and feeling confused or groggy (sleep inertia)

  • Unrefreshing naps that don’t improve alertness

  • Poor concentration, memory issues, and irritability due to constant tiredness
